Why Your Tears Matter

Your tear film is the essence of eye comfort. Without it, your eyes can feel irritated, gritty, and uncomfortable. 3 ingredients make up your tear film:

  • Mucus, to spread tears evenly across your eyes.
  • Water, to hydrate and protect your eyes.
  • Oils, to prevent your tears from evaporating too quickly.

If your tears lack any of these ingredients, you can experience dry eye symptoms.

Types of Dry Eye Disease

There are 2 types of dry eye disease you can experience: evaporative dry eye and aqueous-deficient dry eye.

Both of these issues can cause several symptoms, including:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye redness
  • Wateriness
  • Burning or stinging sensations
  • Feeling like something is in your eye

In severe cases, dry eye disease could increase your risk of corneal damage.

Evaporative Dry Eye

Evaporative dry eye occurs when your tears lack the oils they need to prevent them from evaporating too quickly. Those oils are produced by meibomian glands located along the ridges of your eyelid, and meibomian gland dysfunction is a common cause of evaporative dry eye.

Aqueous-deficient dry eye occurs when your eyes cannot make enough tears. It may occur if you take certain medications or have other health conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome, but your risk of developing aqueous-deficient dry eye can also increase with age.

Dry Eye Conditions

Dry eye disease is often associated with other eye conditions as well. Some of the most common include meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis. We also consider these issues to help develop a personalized treatment strategy for your needs.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction occurs when the meibomian glands located along the ridges of your eyelids cannot produce enough oil to stop your tears from evaporating too quickly.

This is one of the most common causes of dry eye, and we offer several strategies to address meibomian gland dysfunction.

Blepharitis

Inflammation of the eyelid is also known as blepharitis. It can be caused by irritation from bacteria or allergies, and its symptoms include redness around the eyes, swollen, irritated eyelids, flaking skin, and burning sensations.

In-Office Dry Eye Treatments

Vision One Boise is proud to offer tech-driven dry eye treatment strategies to help serve your comfort. It’s important to know that no single treatment can guarantee results, which is why we personalize our approach based on your unique needs.

At-Home Dry Eye Treatment Strategies

There is more than 1 way to address dry eye. We can further personalize your treatment with the help of a range of dry eye products created for at-home use.

OptiLight by Lumenis

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management. The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

Tempsure Envi is a radiofrequency (RF) treatment that helps reduce symptoms of evaporative dry eye.

During the procedure, gentle radiofrequency waves are used to safely stimulate the production of essential oils in your meibomian glands, which helps provide the necessary lubrication for your eyes.

Heat Masks & Warm Compresses

Heat masks and warm compresses can be placed over your eyelids to help melt away blockages in your meibomian glands and stimulate oil production to support your tear film.

Eyelid hygiene techniques and lid wipes can help clean away bacteria, dirt, flaky skin, and other debris around your eyelids. We may recommend these if you are affected by conditions like blepharitis.

Depending on your symptoms, we can recommend a range of vitamins and nutraceuticals specifically designed to support healthy tear production.
